Wummin Specific

A survey from Trek on my views about "women's specific" things initially had my hackles up but I decided the only way things might change is to complete the survey. I've had a bee in my bonnet about the whole women's specific issue for a good while now though mostly about the tokenism attached to it. However it does have a few strands.

To begin with I know I am far from what could be considered as standard sized for a female but its a bit much when every female you know has a gripe about the fit of outdoor gear. With the press now reporting that the average size is 14 in the UK now, it's somewhat disconcerting that this equates to a size large for most manufacturers and that's before you take into consideration the cut of the gear.  More annoyingly, is when you do find a manufacturer who's cut fits your sizing and you like their kit, you buy it and when it wears out you go back to get a replacement to find they have totally changed their cut. Aaaaaarrrrrrrrrggggggghhhhhhh. Women are not alone in this though as I have many a male friend who also complains of this same problem. Some companies are better than others at dealing with the issue that a "one size fits all" is not the way to go while others pay lip service and you end up in a shapeless tatty sack - not attractive and certainly not functional. I'm sure like many others out there, we find no fun trailing round the gear shops searching in anticipation for something that fits.

This brings me onto my next gripe. I have been fortunate to be able to see workbooks for some of the gear companies so know that the range they are producing bears no resemblance to what we actually see in the shops. I can fully appreciate that in this financial climate that carrying the full range is not an option but carrying just one or two options in pastel colours or pink aint the way to get most of us gear monster women to buy the kit. The guys also have the same issue though not quite as badly. OK there are not as many women as men buying kit but when you go into a shop to find less than a 1/8 of the gear is for women yeh I get narked.

Getting back to one of the questions from the Trek Survey that started all this off isn't actually about gear but whether there is a need for women only such as the Trek Dirt Series Programmes. It reminded me of a discussion on Outdoorsmagic that certainly gave a lot of insight into this subject from both sides. I know why such programmes have evolved. The spectre of driven, competitive, intimidating personalities kinda takes the emphasis off of what you're there to learn.  That's not always the case in mixed groups though I do know of some horrific stories. I also know of some in all female groups too. Thankfully that has not been my experience. I've been to a Chick's Unleashed event and really enjoyed it but no more than any of the mixed group ones. So for this part of the survey I had to say I think it says more about your confidence as a person in company whether you might need a gender specific event  along with  your confidence in the instructor who is pivotal for ensuring that everyone; whether that's the larger than life competitive driven or the wee mouse hiding at the back, is given the opportunity. I feel very fortunate that I have had very supportive and encouraging male and female friends who give me the confidence to do things. 

I'm not professing to having the answers to sorting out this conundrum but I do know that the Outdoors Industry could do with having a few more females involved at the decision making end  to get the voice heard. Any vacancies...............................................

  1. I'd throw my four-penneth worth in about the lack of distribution...especially of the good stuff but that's not a "Wummin specific" problem!

    Seem's to me that the outdoor companies/shops just cater for outdoor posers who only walk down the high street and when you do want to purchase a bit of kit with a specific type of performance (for instance a down jacket that goes down to minus 20) then there is only ony jacket made by one manufacturer to try on in the shops.

    Bahh I'm all annoyed now!

    Your right, distribution is a big part of the problem which I can only see getting worse in this financial climate. Unfortunately buyers are always going to play safe and only stock the stuff they know they can sell whether it be for men or women> Not the best when it comes to getting the best kit for the function.

    Oh to have the job of a buyer of outdoor gear......

  3. I totally agree Elaina. It's been a bee in my bonnet for a while now. Sizing, range of gear and colour...
    Even Mountain Equipment started flooding their range of gear with dire pastel colours (Pink and Baby Blue!) and Black (I'm not a Ninja ffs!) . Then they withdrew a cracking jacket I wanted to buy altogether....
    As you say, oh to be buyer of outdoor gear!

  4. I got an even bigger shock the other day when I was looking at cycling gear to discover that one company had said a size 10 was a LARGE!!!!!!!!

    I may have badged this as a women specific issue but it's more a sizest issue for all of us.

    Now the colour thing, well I can put up with black for trousers and tops but when it comes to my hardshell I WANT COLOUR Give me red, orange or proper purple (thanks Buffalo) Have never been a pastel colour person but as well as that they attract dirt. Again this is a very personal thing but being able to have a choice would be nice

Salomon Mission GTX Boot

I've had these on a few times now and so far they are just what I've been after to get me through the winter for most of my days out. Salomon describe them as being perfect for "light hiking" - take that whatever way you want ;-) They come in at 1210g for the pair and feel fairly easy on the feet. They've handled saturated grassy stuff without me applying the famous arse plant (so far!!). They even seemed to be OK on rocky stuff too. Creag Meagaidh MISSION ACCOMPLISHED

Creag Meagaidh has been on the to do list for so long. The past couple of years have seen us have to abort at least three attempts at the last minute because conditions weren't for us. So were we going to get it done this time................. YES  The weather bods said mostly dry with a risk of potential showers later in the day.  It was warm so even if it did rain it would be warm.  Off we set having smothered ourselves in factor 50 and Smidge. We had decided our ascent would be via Coire Ardair and The Window to ease us into the walk on a good path.  It felt more like a slow roasting.  It is a gorgeous walk out to Coire Ardair on a very good path but as soon as we were out of the forest the heat and humidity kicked in.  When we reached Lochan Coire Ardair there was only one thing on my mind, getting my boots off and getting in.  It was at this point I began having major doubts as to whether we would get this done. Mullach Clach a'Bhlair

Our ascent of Geal Charn Mhor had given us food for thought on what was to be our next hill target.  We'd had notions on either Braeraich or  Beinn Mheadhoin but the lack of winter equipment and uncertainty on the true extent of the snow cover put those ideas on hold for the time being. So maps were scoured and the Glen Feshie hills were winning out.  Steve had already done both Munros, Rob and I had done one (though not the same one) and Kate hadn't done any of them.  A cunning plan was hatched that meant we could all start at the same point but we would split into two groups.  Rob and Kate would head for Sgor Gaoith while Steve and I would go for  Mullach Clach a'Bhlair. The Glen Feshie Estate have done an amazing amount of path work which makes the ascent up Coire Fhearnagan to the beallach an absolute pleasure.  We hit the snow line around 700m but thankfully it wasn't too steep.   The traverse over to Mullach Clach a'Bhlair required a w
